Introduction
To The Maldives
Lovely
crystal clear waters, colourful exotic marine fishes and isolated
uninhabited islands. These are just some of the images that come to mind
when we think about the Maldive Islands. Here
you’ll discover an unbelievably beautiful world beyond
our imagination. A world where you can be one of the few privileged people that
can have an island all to themselves - the Maldives.
Location
Of The Maldives
The Maldives
(or Maldive Islands) is an island nation consisting of a group of
atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is located south of India's
Lakshadweep islands, and south-west of Sri Lanka. The Maldives'
twenty-six atolls encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets,
roughly two hundred of which are inhabited.
There are approximately 1200 islands in the Maldives. The capital of
the Maldives is Male - the most densely inhabited island. But while
Male is crowded, there certainly are no space problems on the other
islands. Male holds about a third of the Maldivian population while
the rest are scattered around various other islands.
The Maldives is the flattest country in the world, with a maximum
natural ground level of only 2.3 m. Over the last century, sea
levels have risen about 20 cm. The ocean is likely to continue to
rise and this threatens the existence of Maldives.
A
Brief History Of The Maldives
While there are no certain facts it is
estimated that the Maldives have been populated as early as 1500 BC,
most likely explorers from India and Sri Lanaka (Ceylon). During
1152 there was a conversion to islam although there was a brief
period from 1558 to 1573 when the Maldives was taken over and ruled
by the Portugese. The islands were also under the rule of the
British in 1887. In 1965 the Maldives regained its independence.
